Clothes Shopping in Asia
Asia shopping can be a blast. It does not matter if you are in an upscale mall in effervescent Hong Kong or rummaging through the various but very colorful flea markets in New Delhi, India. You will always find an exotic treasure or two at prices that are normally less expensive than its European counterparts. However, there are still ways and means wherein you can make your shopping experience in Asia a real memorable experience. If you want to enjoy yourself, save money and get some really nice clothes for you and your loved ones, here are some tips on how you can shop successfully in any Asian country.
1.Always try the clothes on for a perfect fit before buying anything. Unless you are willing to spend money and time on tailor-fitted clothes, shopping ready made clothing can be a bit of a trial. Try not to rely on the affixed sizes, because measurements vary per location. What may be large for Kim, may turn out to be a size 1 for Mary. Fortunately, there are now a fair number of local merchants offering “big American sizes.” Although this can be considered as a misnomer, the aforementioned merchants are actually offering clothes, shoes and apparel that are in the medium to large sizes, or size 3 and above in conventional non-Asian stores. Some goods do not have sizes at all. Your best option would always be to choose clothing with loose fabrics like the sarong, islak, and malong. Unless you are particularly thin and petite, such traditional costumes like kimonos, cheongsam, and Áo t? thân would have to be specially made. This tip is essential since many stall merchants do not allow merchandise to be returned or replaced.
2. Know when to buy from the mall and when to buy from the flea market. Shoes, high end clothing, watches, etc. are best bought in the malls – and the Asian malls are usually found in the heart of the cities. Not only are you guaranteed that you are paying the goods for their exact worth, but you are also assured of the fact that these are the genuine thing. However, if you would rather shop for traditional clothes, hand made trinkets, exotic footwear and the lot, your best bet would be to buy from flea markets, swap meets, bazaars, and surprisingly enough, in agricultural expositions where local merchants tend to sell handicraft goods. Gemmed jewelry pieces set in silver with pearl or jade and other precious stones can be availed of in smaller retail stores and stalls.
3. Buy items because you like them, and not because you want to invest in them. This is particularly true for people on the lookout for expensive jewelry pieces and other valuable trinkets. If you are not particularly great with spotting the fake from the genuine articles, you might as well buy something that you like very much from the aesthetic point of view. If you are shopping for more expensive items but do not have the trained eye, it would be best to ask a friend or someone you trust to scrutinize pieces for you before you hand over your money to the merchant. Many merchants would try to give you value for your money, but (as with anywhere else in the world) there will always be one or two unscrupulous individuals who may pass off fakes to tourists.
