Anna Sui breathes new life into prairie style for her spring 2011 collection
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Anna Sui breathed new life into an old concept: "Little House on the Prairie."
Sui's Wednesday fashion show for her spring 2011 collection, during the seventh day of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, was inspired by the American heartland and its landscape — in keeping with a Western theme that often pops up in her collections.
To make this point, Sui had the runway backdrop created to look like a wheat field with a little house in the background. It was all light and sweet and there was a feeling of fun in the air.
"This spring I was inspired by Joni Mitchell, Thomas Eakins, Little House on the Prairie, Neil Young, Andrew Wyeth, Holly Hobbie, Ladies of the Canyon, Winslow Homer ... the poetry and romanticism of the American prairie," she said in notes.
The colours reflected that with indigo, lilac, slate, ash, blue and light beigy tones. There was also a bonanza of vintage prints including patchwork, paisley and checkerboards.
Some dresses looked like aprons, while other looks included cardigans, fringed ponchos, paisley print leggings, long skirts, bell bottoms, and handkerchief hemlines.
Some of the models walked down the catwalk with wheat or feather headpieces.
The show was jam-packed with people fighting over seats. Photographer Bruce Weber showed up wearing his signature headscarf. He said both he and Sui love Elizabeth Taylor and are inspired by her. He added that he was recently affected by a Haitian model he was photographing, whose mother was living in a tent in Port-Au-Prince.
"All of a sudden she broke down and cried and said 'The tent my mom is living in isn't like this kind of tent.' I just felt how fortunate we are and how much we should reach out and help people with what we do," Weber said.
